The Kove Collection, owned by restaurateur & hotelier extraordinaire Paul Kovensky, has added another addition to their prestigious array of contemporary restaurants and bars. Meet Dalliance, the V&A Waterfront’s freshest urban eatery for tapas-style dining and cocktails with a spectacular view of the sea.
Sometimes big trends come on small plates. Over the past decade, the concept of small plates has expanded from a mere curiosity to a strong trend – one which Dalliance has perfected.
The Dalliance menu consists of shareable portions that give customers a chance to sample more dishes and to experience the Chefs’s culinary expertise on a wider scale. The restaurant is situated in the heart of the V&A Waterfront’s golden mile, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The décor is best described as sophisticated industrial chic, with accents of duck egg blue, copper and wood.
With a bustling semi-open kitchen at it’s heart, sunset views over the ocean on the one side and premium shops on the other – Dalliance has it all. The husband and I popped in on Friday night for a much needed date night, and Dalliance offered the perfect atmosphere – romantic, rustic and relaxed. We kicked things off with cocktails and craft beers, watching the sun set over the ocean in front of us.
Cole was just too happy about the Craft Beers on offer (Aces Lager, Devil’s Peak olden Ale, Mind The Gap Berry Cider and Brewers & Union Steph Weiss) while I stuck to cocktails (and a tequila shot or two). Out of the cocktails I tried, my favourite has to be the Spiced Pear Bellini (R60). A blend of Vodka, fresh pear, liqueur, spiced syrup and sparkling wine – it was sweet, yet the spices left a warm feeling in your throat. Crisp and delicious, perfect for Summer.
A close second was the Fresh Mango Daiquiri (R70), a frozen blend of rum, lime and fresh mango which was absolutely fantastic as well.
As far as food went, the menu has a Seafood, Meat, Vegetarian and Sweet Section. My husband is a Vegetarian and does not do dairy, so options were extremely limited for him. The only thing I can fault with Dalliance is the tiny Vegetarian menu.
Of everything we tried, for me, the real stand out was the Salmon Tataki served with Ponzu dressing, garlic and cucumber (R60). The fresh sashimi-style salmon melted in your mouth and the delicate Asian-style dressing was the perfect addition.
I also really enjoyed the Kingklip Tempura which was served on a pea and mint Puree (R90). The combination of the fresh fish with the mint was incredible – who knew that peas and mint went so well together! This is probably the dish with the best value for money.
Out of the other seafood dishes we tried, the Calamari served with pineapple and vinegar (R55) was also quite good, and the Garlic Prawns served with Chili, Olive Oil and Herbs (R95) was good, but not remarkable. The portion was also very small – even for a Tapas restaurant, especially when you look at the price tag.
As far as meat goes, I tried the Beef Slider (R60) – but looking back, there really are much better options to choose from! The Tequila must have influenced my decision… I’m not really a “burger person” to begin with. It was, in all fairness, really tasty and filling.
As I have already mentioned, the Vegetarian menu is quite limited and not too exciting – even more so if you are a Vegan, but the Goat’s Cheese served with Walnuts, beetroot and Watercress (R50) was phenomenal, and so was the Spaghetti served with garlic, olive oil and chili (R40). I would like to see them add a vegetarian burger, or maybe even an interesting stir-fry to the selection.
For dessert, I ordered a real winner! The Chocolate Beignets (R60) is the stuff that dreams are made of! Served with fresh creme chantilly and raspberries, and filled with a rich dark chocolate… oh my. I will be dreaming of this for a while. It also pairs perfectly with the Kir Royal cocktail (R60). Please excuse the photo… you can get the idea though 😉
In all, if you’re looking for a new vibey spot to to have a delicious culinary experience or drinks with friends at the V&A, Dalliance is a top pick thanks to a lovely energy, a great view, amazing service and menu full of well-presented and artfully prepared eats that aren’t going to break the bank.
