Review: Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water

Review: Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water

I only discovered the wonderful world of micellar water early last year. I have tried a handful of drugstore brands, and with a little bit of persistence, they all did the job in terms of removing my make-up. However, none of them were mind-blowing.

I definitely would not call any of them effective when it comes to quickly and efficiently removing make-up, but they are convenient. Towards the end of last year, I attended an event and was introduced to the Bioderma range. They started talking about their micellar water – and a few points were made that I never thought of before. I decided to try the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water… and trust me – it is the best.

First of all, let’s start off with what micellar water is…

Micellar water is made up of cleansing micelle particles suspended in soft water, which draw impurities from the skin. Good micellar water can be used as a facial wash, makeup remover and moisturizer all in one.

It is extremely easy to use, a no-fuss product that is excellent for busy moms and frequent travelers. You don’t need much – just a soft cotton pad or ball and your micellar water. I prefer to use cotton pads as I find it very satisfying to see exactly how much dirt it is removing from my skin.

How to use it…

Apply the micellar water liberally to a cotton pad and gently sweep over the face and eyelids. Repeat until the cotton pad comes away clean. I would personally recommend that you use it at night before bed, and again in the morning. Even if you had a make-up free day, your skin still absorbs air pollutants, sweats and gets small dirt particles attached to it.

At night, our skin works at it’s hardest to regenerate and restore. Excess oil, toxins, and build up is pushed to the surface and if not cleaned properly it can cause oily skin and breakouts. Using the Sensibio H2O Micellar water will help prolong the skin’s eco-biological action that it naturally undertakes while sleeping and protect the skin’s barrier.

The ingredients are important…

Something that was mentioned at the event and a very important thing to keep in mind are that you are not supposed to wash micellar water off after use. It is supposed to stay on your skin – therefore it is vital that you take a close look at the ingredients.

When I got home, I immediately compared the ingredients on the drug store micellar water I was using to that of the Bioderma Sensibio H2O micellar water. I actually could not believe that I did not pay attention to this before. The ingredients on the drug store micellar water are definitely not something I would feel comfortable leaving on my skin – but I never thought to check.

What I love about Bioderma is that their products are inspired by your skin itself. They contain a very limited number of ingredients which are optimally dosed in order to guarantee dermatological safety. BIODERMA selects the purest active ingredients, using molecules naturally found in the skin for better tolerance. Their micellar water is one of the only pharmaceutical grade micellar waters on the South African market, which means that their water is highly purified. It is the same quality as medical water for injection (WFI) – the purest and safest kind of water. At 5.5, it’s pH is similar to that of skin’s.

The short of it, after closer inspection – the Bioderma micellar waters are one of the very few micellar products available in South Africa that I feel comfortable enough to continue using the way it was intended. They are hypoallergenic and contain no alcohol and parabens, perfectly matching with the skin and preserving its hydrolipidic film.

For sensitive skin…

The Sensibio H2O Micellar water is Bioderma’s number one selling micellar water in the world. One bottle of this incredible product is sold every three seconds worldwide. It is aimed at sensitive skin – but what is sensitive skin really? The International Forum for the Study of Itch (IFSI) has even prepared an official definition:

My personal review…

I love everything about Bioderma Sensibio H2O – it’s such a gentle, effective micellar water. It is more expensive than drugstore micellar waters, but you get the same results as you would using a very high-end micellar water without paying an exorbitant price. On days where I’m not wearing makeup I’ll use it as my main cleanser in the evening and morning, and if I do wear make-up then I’ll begin with the Bioderma Sèbium Gel Moussant Purifying cleanser and then use Sensibio H2O in the place of a toner and to remove excess make-up. I love the travel-sized versions – micellar water is so much better than face wipes for on-the-go make-up removal. I wouldn’t be without it.

The best Bioderma micellar water for your skin type…
