The Instant Pot™ is one of those products that took the world by storm. Celebrities, bloggers, and chefs around the world cannot stop talking about it and it has inspired an almost cult-like devotion. There are hundreds of blogs, Pinterest boards, and recipes dedicated to the Instant Pot and with good reason. It is one of the best selling items on Amazon and here in South Africa, it gets sold out extremely fast nationwide whenever a new shipment lands.
Well, before I carry on, perhaps it is best that I tell you that a new shipment has just landed and the Instant Pot™ is available at @Home Stores, YuppieChef and Hirsch’s Home stores. If you are still looking for the perfect gift for the foodie in your home, THIS IS IT. But don’t take too long to get your hands on one, they sell out fast.
Whether you are a stay-at-home, work-from-home or full-time working parent – it is safe to say that there is really just not enough time in the day. We all struggle with the way society has integrated “busyness” into our day-to-day lives. It is easy to feel like you are constantly buzzing, and at the end of the day, you lack the energy to cook a whole nutritious meal. We throw some frozen pizza’s in the oven and add a few more multivitamins to the kids’ daily dose. We let the guilt creep in and distract ourselves by being even busier… and the cycle continues.
Now, there is nothing wrong with having frozen pizza’s for dinner – they really can be a lifesaver! But what if I told you that you could cook a pot of rice in 3-minutes flat, beef stew in 20-mins, a whole chicken in 8-minutes, potatoes in only 4 minutes or mixed veg in 3-minutes? And the best part…. you don’t even have to be there for most of it. This is the purpose of the Instant Pot, this is why it was designed and why it would change your life.
The creator of the Instant Pot – Robert Wang and his wife, Tracy, both worked full time in the tech industry. “We did a lot of takeout, fast food. Kids really love fast food,” Wang says. “But my wife and myself don’t think that’s the way to raise our kids. So, at that point, I was dreaming about an automated cooking machine, which will help me cook [a] healthy dinner after work.”
I have a home-based office where I run my own business and this blog, and you might think that I have it easy… but I don’t. I struggle to take breaks because every second that I spend not working is a second that I don’t make money. There is no-one to force me to take a lunch break, and I get so lost in my own world that time sometimes escapes me. Add a few kids, a husband and a lot of pets to the mix and life can get a tad crazy.
The Instant Pot™ has helped me in so many ways… I would throw in all my Oatmeal ingredients the night before and set the timer so it starts cooking 30-minutes before our alarms go off in the morning. The same went for dinners when I know that I would be out and about attending meetings all day. I can spend time with the kids when they get home, start cooking at 6 pm and have an entire meal on the dinner table 30 mins later. It is incredible!!!
I was extremely overwhelmed when I got my Instant Pot™. There are enough buttons on the thing to launch a missile into space. As soon as you start understanding how the pot works and what all the buttons are used for, it becomes super easy and more convenient than you could ever imagine. I absolutely cannot fault my Instant Pot™, I have been using it almost daily for the past month or so. I have made everything from boiled eggs to the best spaghetti bolognese and Christmas Fruit Cake in mine. I have posted a few of the recipes on here, here is a recap:
I received quite a few questions about the Instant Pot over on Instagram, so here are the most frequently asked ones and what you need to know…
Question 1: How much does it cost?
The 6l Instant Pot™ Duo Smart Cooker retails from about R1999. It seems like a lot of money to spend on a pot, but the way I justified it was that I needed new pots and pans anyway (I have had mine since my wedding 7-years ago). It uses less electricity than having the stove top on for double / triple the amount of time. I can make my own yoghurt (we can only have dairy-free yoghurt in our home and it is so pricey to buy!). The time-saving aspect is a HUGE bonus for me. Time is money.
Question 2: Does it come with a recipe book? How do you know how long to cook things in there for?
It comes with a Cooking Time Table, a Reference Guide and a User Manual. It also has some preset functions like “Stew”, “Poultry” and “Rice”. You can download the free Instant Pot™ recipe app for hundreds of recipes, reviews and tips or follow Instant Pot on Facebook! There are so many recipes out there, you would never get stuck.
Question 3: Is it any different from a normal electric pressure cooker?
This was my first question as well. The Instant Pot is a multi-cooker that does the job of a slow cooker, electric pressure cooker, rice cooker, steamer, yogurt maker, sauté/browning pan, and warming pot. It’s a single appliance that does the job of seven different kitchen appliances or tools and the reason that it has a permanent place on our countertop. The delay timer on the Instant Pot™ is a function that most people fall in love with. It’s perfect for cooking quick foods like oatmeal. You can set it up at night and have it time it to be ready for breakfast.
Question 4: Is it really that cool? Is it a daily-use item?
YES, YES and YES!!!! I basically make everything in mine and it has made it super easy to stick to a nutritious meal-plan.
Question 5: What is your favourite Instant Pot dish?
Honestly, I made my usual rushed spaghetti bolognese in it. It is the best bolognese I have ever had in my life. I am dying to make my own Coconut Yoghurt as well!
